"With some effort, I recognized the underlying design, which was based on a very old pattern, the briar rose. Somehow Master Tielhard had kept the dramatic vigor of the old archaic lines, yet infused them with a subtly that spoke of the vine, the bond and the lash. The thorny lines were stark black, accented in only a few choice hollows with a teardrop of scarlet--a petal, a drop of blood, the mote in my eye."

My second attempt at the marque displayed by Phedra no Delaunay from Jaqueline Carey's series Kushiel's Legacy. I didn't agree with the cover art interpretation as it didn't really match the description, so I decided to try my hand at it to see if I could come up with something that made me happier. So far, so good. ^_^

Very lovely. I haven't gotten around to reading the Kushiel series, but I have seen the cover art, so I understand where this is coming from. I like your interpretation, it looks more elegant than the original and I don't even remember them including the blood. I think yours is a more accurate interpretation that the purely tribal look on the book cover. Awesome job ^^

Thank you very much ^_^. It's my favourite series, to be honest, and I've thought of doing the marque of Alcuin, not pictured on the cover, and my own version of Phedra as well as I never was fond of the depiction, however expertly executed, on the cover. It's mentioned several times that her hair is glossy, thick, curly, and long, and I think that's really my biggest issue now that I'm happy with the marque. ^_^ Thank you again, though. I hope you get to reading them soon.

I've read that book, i really like ur interpretation of the tattoo, its stark and elegant.... almost a little cruel.

Oh, wow. This really is beautiful. And it genuinely does justice to the description far better then the coverart for the book... Master Tielhard was supposed to be the greatest marquist of his day, and something like THIS is what I picture his crowning achievement should have looked like.

Simply gorgeous.
